Week of the Sea – Los Cristianos from the 25th to the 29th of May 2009.
Educative days about the underwater realm on the initiative of the IES los Cristianos in collaboration with the Concejalía de Medio Ambiente of Arona’s Town hall - the department of Agricultura and Pesca from the Cabildo of Tenerife and the association Aula del Mar “Maresía”.
The students of the centre worked during these last two months to recreate with recycled materials (mainly made of worn packing) a submarine environment.
A tunnel which contains a great amount of underwater species (turtle, fish, sea urchin, algae…) is one of the principal attractions of this event. On the bottom of the tunnel are projected documentaries about underwater realm and movies like “Mar de Nadie” or “Deep Blue”. Two classrooms, beside the tunnel are used to reveal with microscopic pupils the life of the living beings of the sea, as to make known the impacts which have the anthropic activities on these ecosystems.
Another activity opened to the public is the visit of the sea water aquariums. They teach us three of the most representative ecosystems of the Canary Islands:
- A rock bottom and alga
- A blanquizal (bottom devastated by the sea urchins)
- A sandy bottom with Sebadal (plant)
An exhibition brought by the Cabildo of Tenerife, called “Azul Marino” which contains, in addition to the aquariums, photographs and texts explaining the marine resources, threats and conservation.
Furthermore, a large photographic gallery about the Cetaceans of the Canary Islands from Sergio Hanquet is located in the Salon de Actos of the IES which will welcome discussions, conferences and roundtable during this week dedicated to the sea. Here some examples of the approached topics:
- Environmental impacts of the littoral and the Canarian seabed
- Plankton
- Sebadal
- Characteristics of the marine flora of the Canaries
- Evolution of the South landscapes.
The guests invited to comment these topics will be scientists from the University of Laguna, from the Museum of the Natural science of Santa Cruz of Tenerife, and documentalists. The photographic exhibition about the Arona Litoral Sostenible 2008 campaign is presented as well.
A conference will take place to discuss with the IES’s students the state of conservation of the Canarian shore and sea-beds. For this event are invited some representatives from the University, the environment protection area of Arona’s Town Hall, commercial fishing industry, scuba diving, as well as ecologist movement.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, the centre will be opened to the public to be able to visit the exhibitions. Admission free.
