Globicephala macrorhynchusAlthough 27 species of cetaceans are living in the tropical waters of the Canary Islands, in the deep waters between the island of Tenerife and La Gomera, there are approximately sixty families of Pilot Whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) permanently residing in that area.

These marine mammals are able to dive for more than 20 minutes at depths exceeding 600 metres. Their diet is mainly made up of giant squids, which live at abyssal depths and by chance are not commercialized due to their ammoniated taste.

An important social lifeThese pilot whales live in group of 10 to 30 individuals. It is possible to identify the males by their hooked dorsal fin.
According to their sex, they can reach between 4 to 7 meters in length and weigh from 2 to 4 tons. Their life expectancy is between 40 and 65 years.

Observation on siteCetaceans are protected by the laws in the Spanish archipelago. It is strictly forbidden to swim, dive or to approach them while sailing. Whale Watching is therefore reserved for the professionals.

Several companies offer excursions at sea, starting from large and comfortable boats, in order to meet with these impressive mammals. An activity not to be missed during your stay in Tenerife.

CABO canarias can advise you on the best «Whale Watching» excursion available.
